About Tom Gilmartin, Founder of Top Gun Flag Football
Tom played football locally in Santa Fe Springs under Coach Marijon Ancich at St. Paul High School. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on a full football scholarship. There he was an All American, leading the nation with 19-1/2 sacks as a sophomore starting defensive end on the 1980 NCAA Division II National Championship Team. In 1983, Tom was signed by the Buffalo Bills. Mr. Gilmartin is passionate about the game of football!
The Formation of Top Gun Flag Football
Top Gun Football was formed in 1995 with the purpose of providing year-round organized 5-on-5 all-passing football leagues for adults. Mr. Gilmartin refereed for two Southern California 5-on-5 leagues and noted that player activity was largely unmonitored by league officials. As a result, there was an abundance of fighting and foul language. Additionally, leagues were unorganized and game times were often "floated". Tom felt he could run a more organized league that would provide a safe, healthy, fun environment for adult play.
Top Gun Flag Football Today
Top Gun incorporates the use of Orientations to introduce new teams and individuals to the game and its rules prior to the beginning of a season. Additionally, once a 5-on-5 season begins, weekly statistics are run on individual, team and league levels, which builds both enthusiasm and competition for the ball players. Game rules and league policies are reviewed at the conclusion of each season to determine where improvements can be made to both the game and the Top Gun organization.
